Eliot Porter
Photographer

[Picture]Known as one of the masters of color photography, Eliot Porter has transformed the way we look at the world. By concentrating on nature as his subject and color as his medium, Porter has developed his own style consisting of carefully observed detail.

[Picture]Born in 1901 in Illinois, Porter was raised into a life of science and medicine yet made the difficult decision to leave these fields for photography. Porter experimented with different methods of printing until he invented the dye transfer (three-color dye) process that enabled him to control color just as tonal values are controlled in black and white photography.

[Picture]Porter has exhibited his work at An American Place in 1939 organized by Alfred Steiglitz and has had a one-man exhibition if his Intimate Landscapes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1979 among many others. His work is shown in numerous volumes of the Sierra Club Series, as well as books on Greece, Antarctica, China, Maine, and the birds of North America.
